Fishing Report -- 06-02-12

Eric from Luxembourg was in town. We headed to Biscayne Bay to see if he could wrangle a Tarpon. As Tarpon fishing goes he saw a lot of fish but the Poons were not showing our international visitor any love. We figured while we were looking for Tarpon we might as well keep an eye out for Bonefish too. The Bonefish were definitely showing more love. Although the Bonefish landed were a little on the smaller side, any Bonefish on fly is a good Bonefish. Eric landed two on fly. He had another two fish hooked up which managed to break him off. Both of course were the larger fish we were looking for. Bonefish have all sorts of tricks to free themselves, these used the ‘run up on rocks’ trick to get off. After midday conditions deteriorated pretty quickly, we saw some more uncooperative Tarpon, a few more Bones and Permit however the morning action was all that Biscayne Bay was offering up that day. We also tried for Tarpon off Palm Beach county, again finding fish however not of the “willing to bite the fly” variety. Conditions weren’t ideal for seeing these fish in the deeper water so we pushed offshore for a little which produced some False Albacore (Bonitos) and a Blackfin Tuna. To round out his trip Eric did some Snook on fly on the docklights, the wind was a little more than we would have liked but none the less Eric ended up with 9 Snook on fly. Not really getting into Tarpon in a big way was a little disappointing but the Bonefish, Blackfin Tuna & Snook, all on fly, made the adventure worthwhile.
