Roy & Ken really hit the lottery today. Yesterday we had rough conditions with over 20 mph winds, today the ocean and wind were dead calm with beautiful sunny skies. The sharks were everywhere and pretty cooperative. Roy & Ken are Walleye fisherman and are used to finesse fishing their target species, this was going to be a little bit of a different experience. Roy had fished these sharks with me before so he knew what to expect however it as Ken’s first time. The day started like most shark fishing trips by catching the bait. Blue Fish and Mackerel were the target. Wasn’t long and Roy and Ken had the top water action going and filling the well with Bluefish. The sharks were pretty active and Roy & Ken had to be careful not to hook the sharks that were chasing the top water plugs. Once we had a few Bluefish in the well we put out the first shark bait for Ken. Less than a minute and Ken had his first Spinner Shark hooked up. A few minutes later his first Spinner did a remote release. Out went another bait, few minutes later Ken as hooked up to this second Spinner shark, few minutes later he was no longer hooked to his second Spinner, another remote release. This scenario repeated itself two more times. Ken was batting 0 for 4. Some days it just happens, if you happen to get a bunch of active jumpers this can happen to you all day long. The longest breakoff streak on my boat is 0 for 9. For Ken shark number 5 was the magic number. This fish treated Ken a little nicer and didn’t go too crazy and break him off. Ken settled into fighting the fish and without too much huffing and puffing had the shark landed. Through all of this Roy was keeping us supplied with bait by continuing to catch Bluefish. Next was Roy’s turn. He stepped up and proceeded to hook a big shark that didn’t jump. These are the toughest to land. With moderate huffing & puffing Roy landed his shark, 1 for 1. Someone else on the boat was 1 for 5. However after his 1 for 5 start Ken kicked things in and only had maybe one other break off the rest of the day. Roy proceeded to catch the largest sharks with no breakoffs. What is really cool about shark fishing when the conditions are so calm & sunny is that we get really good video of the fish eating the bait and jumping and going crazy. By midday Roy & Ken were done fishing and the count was 9 Spinner sharks landed and another 7 or so hooked and lost. For Roy & Ken to have gotten such a nice day in between all the bad weather days be have had they could really count themselves lucky, hopefully they went and bought themselves lottery tickets that night !
