Fishing Report -- 03-30-12

Today Peter had a specific mission in mind and that was to attempt to beat the current IGFA World All-Tackle Length record for the Big Jack Crevalles that are in our waters this time of year. To make it a little more challenging Peter was going to use fly tackle. The current length record is 84 centimeters. This trip was planned some time ago to be right in the middle of Jack season. What we cannot plan is the weather, however Peter was blessed with perfect weather for getting out in the ocean to chase these bruisers. About 30 minutes from leaving the dock we spotted some nervous water, just what we were looking for. Typically we can see the fins and tails of the fish pushing but all we could see was the water moving so it was impossible to tell the size of the fish. The fish were not staying up consistently to key in on them so we prospected the area a little until the fish finally showed themselves clearly. Peter made the perfect cast right on the fish and within a few seconds he was tight to a nice Jumbo Jack Crevalle and the fight was on. After much huffing & puffing Peter landed the fish and it measured 87 centimeters. The necessary photos were taken and the leader & fly cut off and saved for the world record application. So mission accomplished on the first fish of the day, some days it just happens, fortunately for Peter this was one of those days. We then took off looking for Cobia, unfortunately that mission was not as successful. On our Cobia quest we found another school of the Jumbo Jacks and Peter landed another Jack, this time using bait, and can you believe it, it measured out to exactly 87 centimeters too ! After that we saw some stud sized Permit and Peter rounded out the day with a nice size Snook for this time of the year. The IGFA record application will need to be submitted and hopefully approved shortly. In the summer Peter will be back and the mission is going to be going after the World Snook Length Record, let’s hope the Snook are as cooperative as the Jacks were.
