Fishing Report -- 04-02-12
Last time Paul shark fished with me it was December and really just the beginning of the shark season (see Dec 29, 2010 report). What I remember most was the magic trick Paul did by taking a one piece fishing rod and shazamn ! …. David Copperfield style … made it into a two piece rod. Actually more like Ka-pow ! This time Paul was here right at the tail end of the shark season, and I was nervous for my equipment (just kidding). This time of year there are a lot more sharks around and Paul got to experience the crazy shark fishing I keep telling him about. The day was beautifully calm and the stage was set. Within minutes of the first bait going into the water Paul was hooked up to the first shark of the day, unfortunately it was a jumper and soon broke off, nothing Paul was doing wrong. The jumpers are more spectacular however the chance of them breaking off in much higher. It’s just a numbers game, just keep fishing, and that’s what Paul did, three more times with the same result. His count was 0 for 4. The longest breakoff streak on my boat is 0 for 9. Then just like that the sharks cooperated and Paul landed the next 3 fish with no more breakoffs. An even bigger accomplishment was that he landed them without any magic tricks converting one piece rods into two piece rods. As we were heading home we came across a school of Jack Crevalles busting on flying fish, Paul flung a top water plug into them and landed a nice 20 lb class fish. At the end of the day 4 nice sized fish landed and no David Copperfield magic this trip, we’ll see what happens next time.
