Fishing Report -- 02-24-12

Steve and Jamie fished with me last year June, this time they were here to sample a little of our wintertime fishing. No curse of the full moon to deal with this time but it was going to be a race against the wind. We had a small window of opportunity first thing in the morning to get into the ocean so we hit it early to take full advantage of the time we had. Not long after arriving at our destination Steve and Jamie were catching Blue Fish and Spanish Mackerel. Feeling the wind picking up already we deployed the shark baits quickly. Within a few minutes Jamie was hooked into his first big saltwater fish. After getting over the initial shock of half the line disappearing off the reel in a matter of seconds Jamie settled into fighting his first Spinner Shark. To make things a little more interesting Jamie had to deal with rough sea conditions but once he figured out how put good pressure on the fish, that weighs almost what he does, while still managing to stay in the boat, he fought the fish like a pro and landed a nice 75 to 80 lb shark. This was Jamie’s first round in working on developing ‘shark biceps’. A few minutes later was Steve’s turn and his bait wasn’t out long before he was off to the races. A similar sized shark that gave a nice jumping display. Steve too did an excellent job on fighting his shark and successfully landed and released his fish, showing Jamie that his shark biceps were already pretty developed. Father and son had now both caught the biggest fish of their lives. Next was Jamie’s turn again and he hooked into a stud of a Spinner. Not only was it well over the 120 lb mark but it had a really bad attitude. The initial run had us worried that 300 yards of line wasn’t going to be enough. Fortunately the fish finally slowed down and Jamie began working it back to the boat. It was a long tough fight in very rough conditions and the fish just wouldn’t give up. Jamie hung tough and with his shark biceps already showing significant development he got the fish up to the boat, unfortunately as soon as I touched the leader it popped so we were not able to get a good picture of it, however the fight was recorded on video. By the time this was over it was just too rough to stay in the ocean so we sought shelter in the Intra Coastal. Jamie’s shark biceps were not yet fully developed so we headed to a spot in calm waters where these sharks hang out. Here is where Jamie completed the development of his shark biceps on one more fish. Steve rounded the day out with a Spinner of his own, just to show Jamie that although Jamie’s shark biceps had developed significantly in one day, he still has some catching up to do. We’ll see next time how Jamie is doing on closing the gap.
