Fishing Report -- 02-16-12

When Ned fished with me last year in April he brought the wind. This year the wind followed him again. He should hire himself out to windsurfing clubs to guarantee the wind is going to blow when he’s in town. Determined to show Ned the Spinners on fly we headed out. It was a little bumpy right off the bat but Ned had only this one day that he could fish so we had to make the best of what we had. First we began on the Blue Fish. Unfortunately the wind was just too much for the fly so Ned had to revert to the spinning rod. He did a great job in catching a bunch of Blue Fish on surface lures, it wasn’t fly fishing but surface action on a light spinning rod is the next best thing. Soon we had enough fish for chum and changed our focus to the Spinner Sharks. By this time the ocean was pretty white capped. This makes it a little more difficult for the sharks to find the fly but we persisted. It was tough going because of the conditions but finally Ned had a cooperative shark and was hooked up to his biggest fish on fly. It took off like a freight train and gave a pretty good aerial display before proceeding to break off. No respect I tell you, we worked so hard to hook that fish and it just decided to get itself all wrapped up in the leader and break off. If it only knew how hard we had fished to hook it, it may have been a little nicer to us. None the less Ned was ready to try again. Next shark went a similar way, off to the races, jumps and thrashing and then the departing of the butt section from the fly line …aaargh ! A couple of things could have happened, he could have got wrapped up to the point where he got the fly line in his mouth and just bit it off, or that fly line had just caught too many sharks between butt section re-ties. I’d like to think it was the former but more likely it was the latter. The wind had really kicked up by now so we headed to the shelter of the Intra-Coastal water way. We can still catch sharks inside but there are not nearly the numbers as there are in the ocean. Also the water is not as clear so you don’t see them coming as well, which is half the fun of the bite. With the wind blowing 20 kts plus by this stage we elected to go with natural bait. Even with bait it took a little while for a shark to show. However Ned prevailed and landed a decent sized Spinner shark for the inside. Although we didn’t get a lot of still pictures we did manage to get some decent video footage. Next time Ned is in town I’m going to organize a windsurfing competition, that will guarantee that we won’t have any wind.
