Fishing Report -- 08-03-13

Mika, Jaana & Sherry were onboard for a long overdue fishing trip. Bad news was that the wind was blowing too strong to allow us into the ocean, this forced us to fish inside which actually turned out to be a pretty good day on the Tarpon. It was an outgoing tide and remained overcast all morning. The Tarpon were unusually cooperative for a change. 9 Tarpon were hooked and 6 landed, 2 by each angler. Not big Tarpon by any means but catching them on light tackle was still challenging. Mika has fished some but I believe this may have been Jaana’s first saltwater fishing trip, she of course landed the biggest Tarpon and had an even bigger one hooked up that threw the hook. In between the Tarpon some Jacks, Blue Runners and even a Mutton Snapper were caught. Fortunately for this group the bad news on the wind turned out to be good news on the Tarpon.

Fishing Report -- 07-25-13

Lin & Ollie (see report dated 06-22-13) continued their fish catching adventure. Pushing more offshore they caught all the False Albacore they wanted (Bonitos). We fish these on light spinning tackle and fly tackle making them an absolute blast to catch. Mixed in with the Bonitos were some Rainbow Runners and giant Blue Runners. A really nice 25 lb plus Blackfin Tuna was hooked but unfortunately was eaten by a shark before it could be landed. Some big Bull Sharks were also landed, one must have been over 400 lbs, it was a brute. A few Snook and Jack Crevalles rounded out the adventure.

Fishing Report -- 06-27-13

With Steve and Jamie on board we headed out hoping to fish in the ocean today. The ocean had a residual South East chop on it that made it uncomfortable to be out there. We spent a little time looking for Tarpon and only saw one school which rolled once and then disappeared on us. We switched to plan B which was to Snook fish. Jamie did the live bait thing and Steve did the fly thing. Even with cold water pushing into the inlet the Snook were fairly cooperative. Jamie did better with the live bait on the bigger Snook however Steve did very well on sight fishing the smaller Snook on fly. With the incoming tide we could see the fish eat the fly, very cool. We didn’t get the offshore action we had hoped for however still a pretty decent day had on the Snook.

Fishing Report -- 06-22-13

Today with Lin & Ollie Tarpon was the target. The ocean was a little bumpy, the water temperature was just under 80 degrees and the Super Full Moon was on us. Not ideal conditions at all for Tarpon. Surprisingly though we began to see fish along the beach. Not surprising was their actions. Lin & Ollie managed 3 bites on live threadfins but no hookups. It was as though the Tarpon just killed the baits and then spat them out. When the Tarpon stopped showing along the beach we changed gears to Snook fishing. Not long into Snook fishing Lin hooked a decent size Tarpon (of course). He could not have had more challenging conditions. We had a ripping outgoing tide, boats in and out of the inlet, channel markers to deal with and of course the fish ran across the inlet and round a marker. Lin backed off the drag and hoped for the best. As soon as the boat traffic calmed we floated out through the nasty outgoing tide rip and around the marker. Much to our surprise the fish was still on. It then proceeded to stay in the roughest part of the inlet while Lin fought it. Many years of fishing experience helped Lin land the fish that should not have been. Some days you lose fish you think you should land, today was one of those days when we landed a fish we really didn’t think we had a chance on landing, I’ll take a few more of those please !

Fishing Report -- 06-13-13

Bob was on board for two days of fly only fishing. Day 1 started in fine fashion with Tarpon showing themselves early on. Initially they were being typical Tarpon but eventually Bob convinced one to eat the fly.  However after two jumps that was the end of that ride. Strangely enough right after that the Tarpon action slowed significantly. We made a long run in search of more Tarpon finding some but only to have them refuse our flies. Nothing too unusual for Tarpon. At least we were finding fish. After the Tarpon action really slowed we headed offshore in search of more cooperative fish. It wasn’t long and Bob was into the False Albacore (Bonitos) pretty good. Bob had his hands full trying to keep the fish away from the sharks (Bulls & Hammerhead). I think only 3 were lost to sharks, not bad considering Bob must have landed about 20 fish and we could see sharks all the time. Eventually Bob’s arms said ‘no more’. Albies up to 20 lbs, Blue Runners and Rainbow Runners were landed. A Dolphin was hooked but was lost on a jump. A Sailfish came up to the boat briefly but soon departed when it saw the sharks. Day two was a bust on the Tarpon. We did do some Spinner Shark on fly fishing and had 6 bites but unfortunately no hookups. A Snook and a ton of Blue Runners rounded out the day. Bob is the conceptual creator of the Red Jelly fly. An idea to try get the Spade fish to take a fly, maybe one day you’ll see Bob’s Red Jelly Fly in a fly shop near you.

Fishing Report -- 06-07-13

Shane was in town visiting and wanted to do some fly fishing. Tropical Storm Andrea was also in town so the result was another FITRD – Fishing In The Rain Day. The morning started out pretty nice but the afternoon was somewhat on the wet side. Then we also had cold water upwellings to deal with, typically the water temp should be in the 80s but we recorded 69 degree water on the beach. This cold water really put the fish in a bad mood so Shane really had his work cut out for him. At the end of a very challenging day Shane ended up with two nice Bonitos, had hooked in to a 30 plus lb Jack, caught a bunch of little Jacks, a small Snook and lost a really nice Snook to the trolling motor. A very challenging day but a great day on the water none the less considering we had to deal with the effects of Tropical Storm Andrea.

Fishing Report -- 06-04-13

Today was a group outing, 6 boats in all and about 20 anglers. As with most group things there was some friendly competition to be had. Two classes were established, longest Snook and longest fish overall. Peggy, Mike 1 and Mike 2 were on board with me and the plan was to go for the longest fish overall first. Tarpon were nowhere to be seen so plan B was to try for Kingfish. First spot we tried was really slow with no decent bite. The second spot however was very kind to us and Mike 1 landed a really nice 46 inch Kingfish. We then turned our attention to the Snook category. Peggy hooked and landed a nice 32 ½ inch Snook within minutes of her bait hitting the water. Mike 2 caught a Jack but soon after hooked a nice big Snook which unfortunately wore through the leader and released itself (no fault on Mike 2’s part, the Snook just sawed through the 60 lb leader). After that Mike 2 had a Tarpon bite and a miss, Peggy landed a nice Goliath Grouper and Mike 2 landed and even bigger Goliath Grouper. At the conclusion of the trip we found out that Mike 1’s Kingfish won longest fish overall. The longest Snook was 35 inches. Mike 2’s lost Snook was definitely longer than that, unfortunately it just wasn’t Mike 2’s day else we could have had Mike and Mike both with winning fish. Peggy held her own and definitely showed up the boys when it came to catching the bait, must be the finesse element.

Fishing Report -- 06-03-13

Al & Walter were on board today fly fishing only. Finally some good weather. Conditions were great, low winds and calm ocean. Day started with us looking for Tarpon, we did find a decent school of Tarpon and got some good shots but they were being Tarpon and just didn’t feel like playing with us today. We headed offshore and did pretty well. Albies (Bonito), Blackfin Tuna & Dolphin, pretty good day on fly. Company was great and fishing was good, what more can you ask for.

Fishing Report – 05-29-13

Today was FITRD – Fishing In The Rain Day. The winds were blowing and it was raining but Chad, Bob and Brady braved the elements in their quest for a keeper Snook. Fishing was tough today, the usual spots just weren’t offering up the bigger fish. We had a few nice big fish hooked up around the bridges however they all made short work of the line and were not coming to say hello. We picked away at the Snook throughout the day never really finding a good concentration anywhere. Bob did finally land a slot size Snook near the end of the day (we didn’t even get a photo of it !). I believe the total for the day was 12 Snook and one Cubera Snapper landed. Nothing earth shattering but a decent day considering the nasty conditions and uncooperative fish.

Fishing Report – 05-27-13

Paul was in Miami with the wife for their anniversary and wanted to fish even though the winds were blowing 20 mph +.  We figured a night time trip may be best seeing that it was Memorial day weekend, this way we missed the craziness that happens on the water in Miami on holidays. Tarpon was the target species. The big fish were not inside tonight, only the smaller fish. However even a small Tarpon is still a pretty decent challenge to get them off the bridge and landed. Paul did well for this first time bridge fishing Tarpon. He had 5 fish hooked up and two landed. Best part of all is that we weren’t annoyed by a single jetski.

Fishing Report – 05-24-13

Rich and Denise were in town from New Jersey. Last few times Rich has been in town the weather has been really bad and pretty much unfishable. This time earlier in the week the weather was miserable however by the end of the week we got an awesome day. Must be Denise that was the good weather charm. The morning started off with us in Tarpon for quite a while. They were studs however not wanting to eat the fly or crabs. After giving them the good old college try we headed off shore. Not long after stopping the fish started to show. First the small Bonitos and Blue Runners, then a Dolphin, then Rainbow Runners and then the big Albies. Rich and Denise managed to catch at least one of each of those species. See if you notice what is not quite right in the first photo (hint …. Look closely at the fly rod in Denise’s hand, she’s not holding two rods, only one).

Fishing Report – 05-18-13

Harris & Bill joined me for some fly only action. Harris started off with two medium sized jacks on the inside. As soon as Bill got on the rod the action stopped. We headed outside and found a large school of Jacks in the ocean, however they just weren’t in a good mood. The clouds came over and the wind started to blow. We headed offshore. Saw a few small Blackfin Tuna come up on the chum but no takers. Eventually after much rough water we found the Bonitos and both Harris and Bill caught a few before it was time to head in. Not a ton of fish caught today but considering the conditions Harris & Bill did good. Sorry Bill, I didn’t have any pictures of your fish on my camera.

Fishing Report – 05-11-13

Anton & Douglas were on board today to see what we could catch. The winds were forecasted to blow early so we had a small window to get out into the ocean . Fortunately we were able to take full advantage of the nice conditions while they lasted. Douglas landed two nice Kingfish, a shark and Spanish Mackerel. Anton, who only a few months ago turned 7, hooked and landed all by himself his Kingfish along with Spanish Mackerel. These two guys are pretty fish crazy, good to see kids who love the sport. Nice going guys.

Fishing Report -- 04-25-13

It’s always great taking folks fishing for a species of fish that they have never caught before. Doug & Brady were in town escaping the chilly weather of Indiana. With the ocean conditions being borderline we decided that the target species of the day would be Snook. The Snook fishing was decent with Doug and Brady both getting slot Snook. Brady’s slot fish released itself boatside by chewing through the leader, quite inconsiderate I’d say, it must have been camera shy. Doug’s slot Snook was more accommodating (maybe it wasn’t as camera shy). Seeing that the wind was holding off we ventured into the ocean looking for some different species. It was full moon and the curse of the full moon seemed to be in full effect. Brady had a Permit hooked up that came unbuttoned (with the rubbery lips Permit have the hook usually doesn’t pull out). We found some 30lb class Jacks but they refused a live bait (very uncommon). We even had some medium sized Bonitos busting around the boat that refused small live pilchards. We made a few drops on a wreck and both Doug & Brady were hooked up to fish that had absolutely no intention of coming to the surface. Shredded leaders and pulled circle hooks were all they had to show from these encounters. The Snook and some small Jacks were the only fish today that were Indiana friendly, the rest were just taunting our out of state visitors, I’ve filed a complaint with the LFCTB - Local Fish Counsel Tourism Board.

Fishing Report -- 04-13-13

Today with Ollie and Roy was a very strange day. Tides were very weak and I just couldn’t get on the Snook bite like we wanted. The mission was to catch a slot Snook for Roy to eat. I’m pretty much Catch and Release but Roy had twisted my arm to try and get him a slot Snook as he has never eaten a Snook before. Today the Snook bite was way off for us and we only ended up with a handful of Snook the largest being 27 ½ inches. Serves us right trying to break the catch & release policy. On the upside Ollie did get a decent Sea Trout.

Fishing Report -- 04-06-13

Tonight was a Tarpon trip with two friends Jeff & Kevin. These gents regularly fish the winter Tarpon run in Miami and do really well on these fish. They pretty much have this fishery figured out and it was an absolute blast to be able to also fish a little myself for a change. When the shrimp are running the Tarpon are usually there and pretty cooperative. Tonight was one of those good nights. Early in the night Jeff predicted 20 bites and I’m glad to say he was right on the money. I believe we ended up with 19 or 20 bites and 6 landed fish ranging from about 40 to 75 lbs. We had the fly rods along too and managed to land one on fly and have another hooked up. Great weather + two very entertaining excellent fishermen + multiple Tarpon to the boat = Awesome night’s fishing.
